“It appears as if the pandemic has been a wake-up call for thousands of Australians, who are realising the enormous value of private health cover at a time when the public system is under strain and long public waits have become the norm,” said Matthew Koce, CEO of Members Health.

Members Health saw strong gains across the under 45-year-old group, the under 25s and in the key 30-to-39 age group.

“In a year that has forced many Australians to reflect upon their future health and wellbeing, more young families are signing up to private health cover and taking greater personal control over their healthcare.

“Younger Australians today are perhaps more health conscious and better informed than any of the generations before. The fact that so many are choosing a Members Health fund is a testament to the quality, reliability, service and shared values they offer.”

Mr Koce said the benefits of having private health insurance had never been more obvious than now.

“With so many public hospital waiting lists stretching out into the years, having certainty around fast access to high quality healthcare with doctor of choice has never been more critical for young people and their growing families,” he said.

“Every bed used in a private hospital also helps take pressure off the overstretched public system by freeing up space and services for those that need them most.”

Members Health is the peak industry body for an alliance of 26 health funds that are not-for-profit or part of a member-owned group, regional or community based. They all share the common ethic of putting their members’ health before profit. Our funds represent the interests of more than 3.9 million Australians.
